BERNICE MATTKE'S OBITUARY
Bernice passed away on Oct. 26, 2023, age 98, from heart failure. She was born Bernice Carol Swenson on Sep 14, 1925 to (Samuel) Melvin and Emma Swenson, farmers in Clinton, MN. She attended a little country school, skipped 2nd grade, graduated high school at age 17. She went to Ortonville and worked at the courthouse for two years, got bored, so entered the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corp at Hamline U in St. Paul. World War II then ended, so she did not have to serve. While she was in training at the psych hospital in St. Peter, MN she met Harold, a college student. (He picked her up in his Model A Ford!!!) They were married in1948, lived in Minneapolis, had four children. While taking care of their home and being an excellent, devoted mother (often sewing dresses for her girls), she was also employed by Asbury and Methodist Hospitals and then Hennepin Co. General/ Medical Ctr. for 26 years (to help pay kids' college tuitions!)
Bernice started ballroom dance lessons at age 58, earned many First Place awards dancing into her 80's with her instructors at competitions around the U.S.! She also was an active member at Messiah and Mt. Olivet Lutheran Churches in Mpls. and was a volunteer nurse at Mt. Olivet's summer camp. She and Harold moved to St. Louis Park and as retirees took several trips and cruises. They were married 69 years! Harold died in 2017. Bernice lived her last six years at Amira Choice Sr. Bldg. in Minnetonka, but she still loved to be taken out to restaurants every day up until the night of her death!
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, also brother Roger Swenson, sister Doris Haugen. She is survived by children Lynne Schulz of St. Louis Park, Marna Mattke of Plymouth MN, Laurie Mattke of Aurora CO, and son Tim Mattke of Las Vegas NV; grandchildren Jenny Zechmeister (Mike) of Wayzata and Andy Schulz (Raina) of Eden Prairie; and great-grandchildren Annie, Jacob, James Zechmeister, and Stella Schulz; other relatives in U.S.
